As mentioned on Slashdot, Maxtor is releasing new drives with 80 GB platters. With larger platters, that should mean for faster drives.
And, in an example of the I-just-washed-my-car-and-now-it’s-raining effect, I just bought a new hard drive last week (it arrived yesterday). But, I don’t feel so bad, especially as it looks that Maxtor is decreasing its warranty from the industry-standard three-years down to one.
Some people in the Slashdot comments were dissing Maxtor, but I disagree. Sure, Maxtor was a budget drive-maker 7 to 10 years ago. But, they turned themselves around in the late-90s. I bought their first 7200 rpm IDE drive (a whopping 10.2 GB at the time) in 1999, and it has worked flawlessly ever since.
So, yeah, I’d buy Maxtor again. But, in this case — at least at the time I made the purchase — Western Digital offered superior performance.

FWIW, the *only* harddrive I’ve had fail in 10+ years of working with this sort of thing was an 80 gig Maxtor a few months ago.
No more Maxtors for me.
jon: Very true!
Just no more 75gb IBM Deskstars for me. :-) Getting faulty HDs from a vendor like Dell is bad news.
Because they don’t want to replace it with anything except the same exact model (there is a class action lawsuit against IBM regarding this drive).
I’ll just be happy when some new, more reliable storage medium comes along. :-)
Of the 10 Maxtor 10gig HDD I bought, two worked the rest was faulty, I have about 4 Maxtor 10gig and 1 20gig HDD in my workshop from customers that are all faulty, must admit so far no problem with the 30gig, I like to believe in Maxtor but it sure as hell is getting very difficult…
Never had a hard drive fail…and I use many computers. I have had the maxtor and with months I had a smart failure warning that would not go away. I am now in the process of having them send me a new one in exchange for the old one. Inconvenient…ah yes…BS…ah yes. Never again for maxtor.
Hello,
I have an older Gateway which has two hard drives. One (C drive) was original equipment, the other (D and M drives) I had installed later. All was fine for years until I turned the computer on one day and got a message that said the battery was dead and found the computer wouldn’t boot properly. After I installed a new battery the computer booted and ran fine EXCEPT the D and M drives on the second hard drive appeared nowhere. Not in the File Manager, Explorer or the Device Manager. They are not shown anywhere in the computer. I belive the data is all there, the drives are just not being recognized. Any suggestion as to how I can get these drives to “reappear” would be greatly appreciated. Could you help? Thank you, Bob
