Dallas Bans Smoking in Restaurants

Dallas city council members have voted 10-3 to ban smoking in restaurants, effective March 1:

City leaders snuffed out smoking in restaurants today, passing an ordinance that exempts stand-alone bars, pool halls and tobacco shops that have separate areas for smoking.

The ban approved 10-3 by city council members also bans smoking in various public places, including hotel bars and lobbies, country clubs, bingo halls, hospitals, libraries, schools and transit system vehicles. Many of those places already ban smoking or had areas restricted by the city. […]

I’m not sure how I feel about this one. I think it’s pleasant that I might be able to better enjoy restaurants without smoke, but I don’t think it was the right decision for the government to dictate that.

  1. I think a ban in restaurants is fine. But the ban in bars is a bit extreme – given the 45 day limit they have to comply. Ah, you have to love politicians up for re-election going for the easy ones.
Why not give bars the option of installing those big industrial air cleaners like they have at Cosmos? Give them, say, 6 months. How would nonsmokers feel about that? I can’t say Cosmos is totally as clean as a completely smoke-free place would be, but I personally don’t notice smoke in there much at all.

  2. I personally think this is BS. Why because all of these restaurants payed big bucks for special devices to clear the smoke out in a smoking section.

I know I am kind of biased because I smoke…but its kind of unfair if you ask me. Hell you can drink all day at a bar and it’s legal…but more harmfull then smoking….and don’t say it’s not harmfull to other people…drunk drivers and abusive parents are key examples of how it affects the innocent here.

Yes smoking is bad and I shouldn’t do it…but taking away from people is wrong. I bet restaurant owner are going to be pretty mad about this considering that probally 1/2 of there clients smoke. I for one will refuse to eat in Dallas unless it’s company driven.

Another thing to think about is to take smoking out of restaurants that don’t have a proper area for smoking….meaning that the smoke must be handled properly so it dosen’t bother the non smoking section.

  3. I really don’t mind the restaurant ban. I’ll admit that smoking around eating is disgusting, and in fact given a choice will usually sit in the nonsmoking section myself. But bars are a different kettle of fish. Especially when there are technology-driven solutions (instead of politically-correct-driven ones) that would result in a compromise fair to all.
The real thing that bothers me is the hypocrisy. State and local governments practically making cigarettes illegal anymore – yet profitering from billions of $ in tax revenue from the sale of cigarettes. I wonder how Laura Miller’s budget would look without any tax revenue from cigarette sales?

  4. > The ban approved 10-3 by city council members

The ban appears to have been led by mayor Laura Miller, who may be in for the fight of her life next election cycle.

If non-smokers don’t want to eat in a smoky place they take their business elsewhere. Steakhouses from Austin to Amarillo allow smokers and non-smokers to co-exist peacefully in their own areas.

  5. I think that smoking in any resturants is gross and uncalled for. There is no need for someone that smokes to have to in a resturant they can easily wait until they are done eating to go outside and have one and respect others, other then haveing to smoke while others are trying to enjoy their meal

  6. I think that smoking in resturants should be banned basically because everybody doesn’t smoke and we shouldn’t have to inhale other people’s smoke. I personally hate the smell of cigarettes. And when I’m sitting in the non-smoking area of a resturant and still smell the smoke makes me mad.

  7. I THINK IT’S COMPLETELY FAIR.WHY SHOULD PEOPLE THAT DON’T SMOKE HAVE TO INHAIL OUTHER PEOPLES GARABAGE.MY FARTHER IS ALERGIC TO SMOKE AND CAN’T GO NEAR IT WITHOUT HIS EYES WATERING.DOES THAT MEAN HE MUST STAY AT HOME WILE THE REST OF THE FAMILY GOES OUT TO EAT.

  8. I think smoking should be banned in resturants because it’s just plain out gross! Your sitting there eating and smoke gets all up in your face. It’s hard to eat, and some people start couphing and get sick.Anyway it’s really bad.

  9. i think that banning smoking from resturaunts is great thing. This way people that dont smoke dont have to in hail all the shity polution that ciggaretes make. Plus second hand smoke is worse than first hand.

  10. please send me some information on this topic becaus ei am doing my Senior Speech on this very same topic and i would love to have your imput

  11. I personally think that it’s important for non-smokers to sit in a non-smoking section, isn’t that the whole point of doing this, so that non-smokers won’t be around smoke? I hate the smell of liquor on a person’s breath, so I don’t go to a bar. I think it should be in control of the restaurant owner, it’s their call, they’re the one’s paying the price for their own decision

  12. I beleive that smoking in restaurants, bars, casino’s and bingo hall’s should be revoked. 1st of all your going out to enjoy yourself so why would you be having fun while your inhaling air that can kill you. 2nd of all if your in a restaurant, it’s disgusting to be eating something that tastes like cigarette smoke. 3rd of all, a lot of people are schanging from cigarettes to cigars wich are much stronger and while your out enjoying yourself you wouldn’t want to be inhaling anything that can potentually kill you or do damage to your body.

  13. It’s about time. All the “threats” of smokers taking their business elsewhere is nothing but self-serving rethoric. Government has a duty to protect constituents from known threats. Smoking has been shown to harm all people in a confined space. Thus, it should be out-lawed. Smokers have the right to harm themself. They do not have the right to harm others. This complaint revolves around the inconvience their own smoking has caused them. Talk about self-absorbed!!!

  14. i think that smoking is gross & disgusting. I have children, and they cough every time we go into a smoking restaurant.LOL
