Metallica is readying their next studio album, St. Anger, for release on June 10th (their first in five years). I haven’t cared for Metallica much since the Black Album days (though …And Justice For All may be my favorite), but they claim that they may be selling-in this time around:
The release of St. Anger on June 10th will bring fans the old Metallica from the early days before the Black Album. The album is said to have the same thrash metal vibe that gained them underground popularity in the mid ’80s. […]
I remain skeptical about that, but hopeful all the same. I’m sure that their songs will get airplay through their usual bribes to radio stations (as all major record labels do). So, I suppose I’ll at least have a chance to hear a few tracks before buying it.
Ah yes. A LATERALUS reference. Arguably the best album to come out in the last 5 years. Absolutely amazing and so are Tool.
tool ugh, when i saw them last year, maynard just stood at the back of the stage, while some amazingly boring acrobats from the lateralus video clip did some stunts,…now that my friends was a pure waste of 105 dollars. Metallica in 1997 50 bux for an amazing hellride rollar coaster…well thats just my opinion. Tool are boring live geez gimmie something i can bob my head too. The real pisser was that they didnt play sober…possibly the only song i can still listen to now without falling asleep. This is coming from a person that before seeing tool live was considering a tool tatoo……
adios
Been a fan since ’91 and the main thing about the Metallica is INTEGRITY..thery have tons of it. Case in point: The shows that were made up on the last summer sanitrium tour for FREE cost the band somewhere in the realm of a million dollars according to the fan club magazine. Also they play what they want, not what the naysayers want and I respect that. A free dVD with the album? hell yeah!! Love ’em or hate ’em, they have integrity.
I cant speak for Tool live, but Lateralus is one helluva a roller coaster ride
Yeah, I don’t see why 40 yr. olds can’t write aggressive music. What the hell does age have to do with it. Leo Ornstein was writing crazy ass piano music when he was almost 100. Plus, Load went more “back in time” than St. Anger could ever go just for the fact that the stuff on Load had been done by Aerosmith (2×4) Saxon (Outlaw Torn) and many others. I’m talking about general style of course but it had been done nonetheless.
Frantic (5:46)
St. Anger (7:19)
Some Kind of Monster (8:24)
Dirty Window (5:23)
Invisible Kid (8:28)
My World (6:30)
Shoot Me Again (7:09)
Sweet Amber (5:24)
Unnamed Feeling (7:07)
Purify (5:13)
All Within My Hands (8:44)
These are the songs on the new album just to clear things up for people
is the album title “st. anger” pronounced Street Anger or Saint Anger??? it makes no sense! abbreviating an album title! especially such a confusing dual-meaning abbreviation. and hey to anyone with an ear for philosophies: why is abbreviation such a long word??? can someone tell me whether its saint or street anyway
It’s Saint Anger, if st. stood for street it would be after anger. I don’t care if the album sucks, cause it’ll give me somethin to listen to for 75 minutes anyways. Honestly, I think new metallica is just as good as pre-black album metallica. I don’t know about Rob Trujillo though…
Um… I keep hearing about these comments of people who say: “…better then all the shitty metal out there today”. Look up centurymedia.com, don’t get pissy and reply in 2 seconds, even if you know about the place, just check it out. They have CONTEMPORARY metal bands that are simply more complex and metallic than Metallica. I love Metallica, they are my favorite band, because of their sound, songs, and style, but in terms of technicallity, skill, and opinion, you might find there are other bands out there that are at their peak making great metal. i.e. Iced Earth, Nevermore, Dream Theatre, Jacob’s Dream, check it out.
Sorry for bad English it’s my second laguage. :)
Hey guys and so called FANS, what do you think, if you are a FAN of Metallica or any other band you can tell them how and waht kind of music to play? Listen to youselves: ‘They are not heavy as they were.’. The phrases like this you can find everywhere on the web. But who is playing, you guys or a band? Don’t blame anybody. If you don’t like the new Metallica – hang on the old albums or just throu all the CD’s you have away. Don’t be like a child who’s crying without a favoutite toy ’cause it is damaged.
If you interested I’m also old fan of Metallica and I’m from Russia. And you never belive if I say that these guys were like Bible for me and many of friends of mine. But thigs do change and the life goes. All you have to deal with is you place in this new music.
ok, if that’s the tracklisting, Sweet amber sounds definitely heavier than any of their recent work. The vocal style sounds like Hetfield but it’s different, don’t know, doesn’t sound as appealing. It makes sense that Metallica would make a heavier album now because metal was not in a funk it used to be five years ago.
As for evolving, I think a band should evolve..it’s all a question of quality. Reload was a piece of garbage, sounded like an array of leftovers from Load. Is that evolution? hopefully St Anger will be a better album.
Robert Trujillo may have instilled a certain heaviness
hmm, now that I listened to it again, I doubt that was Metallica
rob is a bonafide bass player, u can hear him on jerry cantrells latest album degradation trip. tho he didnt play a single note on the new album
I’m a disenfranchised fan of 80’s Metallica (Justice was the last album they released that I liked) … I like the complex, long-winded, uncompromising, THRASH METAL Metallica from the early days. Load and Reload weren’t complicated, and it wasn’t thrash. I’m not putting Metallica down as musicians, I just think their newer music has lacked the heaviness and complexity that Metallica used to embody. They also gave up their attitude during the nineties. They compromised a lot of the intense, rebellious, anti-establishment attitude they used to have.
Anyway, on a positive note, I am extremely intrigued by the lengths of some of these songs. I hear this album is going to sound a lot like old Metallica – complex, heavy and long-winded. Just like I like it. I hope it’s true. I’d love to actually like a Metallica album again.
Everyone on this little chat board has a right to their own opinions. Even if you think they suck. I know that I am going to get a little windy with this, but bear with me.
I personally think that anyone who is holding on to the fact that Metallica has “sold out” is a whiny assed baby with nothing better to do. Face it, the black album was the last one that was actually great. Justice was that last one that was actually heavy. And load/reload could have been condenced into one album.
What really gets me is how everyone is saying “oh my God, Metallica has become pussies.” Or “Man, Metallica is so complex with their music and lyrics and philosophies. Fuck that. Metallica is a thrash metal band from the ’80’s that are still trying to keep themselves afloat. Do I respect them? Believe it or not, I do. They have stayed true to themselves. Whether you want to call it selling out or not, they have. I don’t think that they changed with the times. I think they just got old, and wanted to try something different.
Now, as far as the complexity of their music, I will be the first to admit that they are a very talented group of people. But if you want real complexity, check out Dream Theater. If you want good lyrics and messages, check out the Insane Clown Posse.
Dudes, I have just talked about two of the most oppisite bands known to man, but the fact is, is that I am a die-hard fan of both. What I am trying to say is that it doesn’t fucking matter if someone sold out or anything like that. If you enjoy the music, listen to it! If you don’t then trash the fucking thing. The bottom line is that people are hung up on whether metallica sucks or not. Are you trying to influence other people, or convince yourselves. Get over it!!!!
whaaaaazup
is there chance that metalica plays a lot of song of the new album on werchter ?
greetings !
Joshua,
Some of us actually believe that Metallica used to embody certain ideals and philosophies. They’re not “just a thrash metal band from the 80’s”. If that’s all you think, then you’re either choosing to blind yourself to this, or you weren’t a fan of theirs back when they actually championed these philosophies and ideals. If you were a real fan of Metallica back in the 80’s, you’d know that they have compromised every musical and philosophical ideal they ever had as a band.
This does not make them bad. This does not make them unviable. It’s just a plain fact.
I think Metallica is still a good band, and there’s a lot of good musicianship on Load and Re-Load, but that doesn’t make these albums good Metallica albums. The Black album was not great by any means. It was actually pretty bad by Metallica’s standards. Compare it to Justice and Puppets and Lightning. Even Kill ‘Em All has a lot more integrity than the last 3 studio albums they’ve come out with.
Don’t put me down for having my opinions, man. They’re very viable opinions, and they’re based on FACTS, not presumptions.
It really irritates me when people jump down my throat just for expressing my own personal opinion. It sounds like YOU need to get over something.
Oh, one other thing –
Metallica used to be more complex and have great lyrics. The lyrics and music on Load and ReLoad does not compare at all to the musical-complexity and great lyric-writing on Puppets or Justice.
Metallica can change all they want, I don’t fault them for that. It’s just that the change has been in a decidedly LESS CREATIVE, MORE COMMERCIAL direction. So the quality of their newer music in this context and in relation to the quality of their previous music, has DECLINED IMMENSELY. If you can’t admit that, then you are lying to yourself.
But it’s okay to like new Metallica. Good for you. It’s good music. I never said it was bad music, stand-alone. It’s very good. But it’s not NEARLY good enough for Metallica. I have higher expectations than that. If those songs were written by any other band, I’d like them more, but Metallica is special. They’re too good to lower themselves to that level.
In my opinion anything after the Black album was not even close to as good as the earlier albums, its not even the same ballpark. I dont know anything about this new album but from the recent past albums im NOT going to run out and get it.
If they revert back to their ROOTS of just completely kick-ass music like days-of-yore, then I will be interested again. I just feel very strongly opposed to new metallica maybe it because I grew up listening to Master and RIDE THE LIGHTNING….Those albums are the best HANDS DOWN!
but then again things change…some for the better some for WORSE.
But alas..this is “my” opinion.
right “tweck”?
So if you think Metallica sold out then you’re a whiny-assed baby? That makes no sense. I think Metallica sold out, but I think you’re just as much of a whiny-assed baby for telling people that if they think Metallica sold out then they’re whiny-assed babies. And you shouldn’t be in denial about the fact that Metallica sold out. They sold out. It’s that simple. It’s a fact, not an opinion.
Morons.
O.k. its like this….who really cares if Metallica sold out or not…i mean really??? There are way too many rap artists, pop artists, and wanna be rock aritsts who are putting out the most unlistenable garbage i have ever heard. Ever listen to 50 cent?? puhlease. Come on people….rock is rock…bottom line….there is hope that this album will be “like the old days” maybe..maybe not…..but i can arguably say it will at least be listenable. Or else theres always the old stanby “the backstreet boys!”
Vascular2 was the only person out there who i think really got what i was trying to say. I knew that i would piss people off by what i wrote and quite frankly, i don’t care. So what if Metallica sold out. That was the point i was trying to make. I think that people are just getting to hung up on Metallica and whether or not they are capable of producing the same thing they did back in the 80s.
And this part goes out to matt. I understand how complex and deep metallica has been over the course of their career. Master and Justice are two of my all time favorite albums. Eye o\t beholder is a powerful tune as well as Puppets. All I am saying is that I personally think that Metallica has run there course in the origanllity department. Is that bad or good? It doesn’t relly matter. Hell, look at aerosmith and the rolling stones. They have been basically releasing the same song over and over for the last ten years. And don’t get me wrong, i don’t compare Metallica to the likes of the stones or aerosmith. I understand completely that they are all in leauges of their own. And i am not claiming that Metallica is releasing the same songs over and over. What i am saying is that they don’t have the same power and charge that they once had. Hundreds of bands have faded off over the years. Some of them were once world wide, rude rockers. Motley Crue, Tesla, Pearl Jam, Skid Row, Kiss, Savatage ect…
The one thing that i loved about old Metallica was that they would you great orchastration with awesome thrashing. But they lost that somehow. They lost that edge. I don’t think it’s so much of a band selling out. Do I think Metallica did? After the whole Napster incident, yes I do. When they first released load, i enjoyed the album. Even though i did’t feel that it was up to the standards of the old metallica, it was still a good album. But they lost the edge the had. Then when lars and james came out and showed what true money grubbing assholes they were by sueing napster, i lost most of the respect i had for them as people, not as musicians. I mean they were selling out every concert they played and making millions on merchendise alone. And hell, they have always had a strong enough fan base that the TRUE fans would spend the money on the cd’s instead of downloading them. If there is a band that i am not that hardcore into, then i will download most of their music. But for the bands that i am hardcore for, i will buy the album and support the band however i can.
And to all of those who just can’t get over these facts, yes, they are whinny assed babies.
I think you are all whiny assed babies, including my husband, Joshua. I can respect a lot, and I mean A LOT of different bands and music. But I’m not going to down anyone for thier opinions. Some people like some music, and some people don’t. Some people like some bands, and some people don’t, it’s just that simple. And although it’s fun to post these messages and get a response out of people. Whether Metallica sold out or not and all of that blah blah bullshit, is not the highlight of everyone’s existence. Yes, I like Metallica. Some songs I love, and some I can’t stand. The whole napster thing, although I don’t agree with it, is their own perogative. They have the right to do that. They own the music. So, you like it or you don’t. End of story.
I’m gonna get her for that.
Ok…Metallica rules end of story. Many people hate what they have become and what they stand for with all the napster bs…and I say have any of you cut a major record…wow looks like no hands are coming up…so shut the f#@k up! There are hardships that none of us can even imagine and whether I am a millionaire or not I would like to know that my album is being paid for everytime a person hears it to ensure that none of the studio time was spent in vain. You can love music and do it for the fans and pay the damn bills at the same time. By the way…if any of you saw the Icons presentation tonight on MTV you would have seen Metallica playing a new, awesome, track from St. Anger and that was some of the best thrash shit I have heard since …And Justice for All!
Metallica finally gets the respect they deserve. MTV Icon was awsome. Its kinda funny for a band who has been acused of selling out, putting out shity albums, and I remember some looser saying they have have lost their “EDGE” were all prooven wrong last night. You free-loaders need to let the whole Napster thing go. They had every right to sue and do what they did. FACT- if we the selfish fans are allowed to download every song or album we want what will happen to the music industry as we know it? If you didnt get a paycheck would you go to work? Sure they are millionares, but who gives you the right to judge when somebody has made enough money and just produce their music for free? Any way the Napster thing is dead and gone. Its just the little white trash loosers sitting in their mobile homes bitching cause they cant afford to go buy a dam cd. Those of you who are not Metallica fans anymore I have to say thank you, because now you have made more room at their concerts for more of the REAL FANS.
Note* this message has been brought to you from a real fan, not some looser stuck in the 80’s.
I’m retracting every negative thing that i have said about metallica. but i believe that their so called “true fan base” has got to be one of the most retarded, uptight group of people that i have ever seen. All of you are so close minded to other musical styles that i don’t think any of you will be happy until metallica is the only band on earth. I give up. You all suck and i don’t care if metallica puts out another album or not. Fuck off!
Why are we even debating this topic? I thought it was common knowledge that Metallica is the greatest heavy metal band since Black Sabbath and unquestionably the greatest American rock band!
And that Napster thing! Is this still an issue in some of your little brains? Why doesnt anybody get all over Type O Negative or the thousands of other bands that put their names on that lawsuit who decided to remain anonymous? Metallica were the only ones with enough balls to raise the middle finger and say FUCK YOU! YOU CANT DO THAT WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION!!
To the Metallica fans who think they “sold out” (how old is that term getting?), do me and all other true Metallica fans a favor: dont buy their albums, dont go to their shows, turn the radio station when any Metallica song comes on that wasnt on Justice, Ride or Puppets and start listening to “cool” bands who didnt have a problem with Napster like Radiohead or Pearl Jam. We dont need you.
Everytime an anti-Metallica comment pops up anywhere lately, I giggle to myself and think of the Iraqi Information Minister.
To sit here and say that Metallica is done, they lost their creativity and will never again make another killer album is the same as the Information Minister saying: “The Americans have been defeated and they are laying in shallow graves 100 miles from Baghdad.”
All this while American M1-A1 Abrams tanks are rolling through Baghdad in the background.
Hey, at least there is a future in politics for you losers!
I bought “Load” and “Reload” and liked them for what they were worth, which is essentially a simplified, slower, and slightly southernized version of Metallica.
I too am not asking for them to rehash former glory. But what I would like is for the band to recapture some of the feeling, the power, the drama, and the musical complexity which are the hallmarks of Metallica’s greatest records.
I don’t fault them for change alone, but change without improvement is a wasted effort. I believe they’re still on a train headed in another direction. This new album is going to have to convince me that it’s worthy of comparison (in terms of quality, not style) to anything in the Metallica back catalog. Short of that, I’m not interested in buying it.
And regarding Robert Trujillo: I think they could not have hired any bassist available with a better street cred. He’s a great addition. But if Jason couldn’t influence the band with his own “harder” leanings, I’m not sure how much more Rob will do. If he does, it will be because he’s injecting new blood into the band rather than from a “harder” approach. In a lot of ways I think Jason was never accepted as a “full member” of the band, so his musical ideas were basically ignored. Jason was more a backup player than a creative force within the band. Let’s hope that changes.
its great to hear that the big boyz are coming up with a new video.really im very eagerly awaiting uts arrival.till then bingo
WHY DONT YOU MAKE A BETTER ALBUM!
OK.. picture yourself in metallicas shoes. can you? can you begin to imagine what these guys have sacrificed and given up for the world?
All you nerdy ass metal fans on these forums and no better than the people who feed into ja-rule and 50-cent type shit.
Its nerdy shit, that shouldnt have an effect on your life.
And ALL metallica rules!

Bands change. People change. If everything they did was the same, you people would still be bitching at one thing or another. Get over it and move on. Metallica is legendary and will ALWAYS BE LEGENDARY. THE END.
hey guys i heard in the next 2 weeks single for saint anger will be on sale…well its only a rumor from a friend atm.
Talk about bands that don’t evolve…..what about the Red Hot Chillipeppers?

is this a good or bad thing?
i guess i cant say till i hear the album for myself
>’Tallica this ‘Tallica that.
>First off, the Black album totally blew. Pure >pop, market fed crap.
I know that quote was posted a while ago but I had to comment on it. The Black album did not suck. It was not some Pop market fed crap–it was original. Especially “Nothing Else Matters,” which was never intended to be on that album–it was Hetfield’s personal writing that the other members got their hands on and liked enough to turn into a song.
Load and Reload didn’t suck. They were different, but they showed that Metallica has diversity.
If the new album is as good as Load and Reload I’ll be happy buying it.
I had to add my two cents–everyone else has.
