Autoblog on Speed Channel’s WRC Coverage

In a post last month about how Netflix tried to recommend a pregnancy workout disc to me after I had added an autocross driving disc to my queue, I made an attempt at describing WRC (World Rally Championship racing). However, I came across an entry at Autoblog (a car blog in the Weblogs Inc family) that painted a better picture:

I personally think that the WRC is the most exciting race to watch, and the more you guys care, the more chances they’ll show it live in the US. Here are the reasons to care: It has fast drifting turns, spectacular scenery, death-defying leaps over blind crests and some dude in the passenger seat reading out the turns to a guy driving at 100mph who hasn’t seen the road before. These guys have balls, real manly ones. Oh, did I mention awesome crashes into trees? Yeah, they got that too. For those of you who want to start watching, the WRC Magazine show airs on the Speed Channel.

After reading over that, I really began to ponder whether I should sign up for DirecTV sometime (or some other television service which includes Speed Channel). Really, I’m not even sure what my options are, Speed Channel-wise. I’m pretty sure that DirecTV carries it, but might Comcast Digital Cable or Echostar carry it as well? Oh, and just to clarify a minor thinko in Autoblog’s post — the drivers have seen the roads before, during the pre-race “recce” (however, in the midst of a race, the driver steers largely on the faith of the directions blurted to him by his navigator in the passenger seat).

  1. The Speed channel is one of the greatest channels out there. I can’t believe as a can fan you can go without it. My TV knows no other stations. It’s funny though how everytime I’m working on my car in the garage, they have that Rally Racing on Speed. It really is some awesome racing. 100mph in a Ford Focus on a dirt road (sometimes 4ft above a dirt road catching some air). What sane person would go that fast in dirt in a Focus? What’s even better is, I was watching a race where a driver slided sideways into a rock and took out the rear tire. They drove on a flat, then on the rim after the rubber came off, then on the brake rotor after the rim fell off… It was pretty cool. Speed Rocks!

  2. Not all drivers drive the pre-day “recce”. In fact most drivers don’t. Much faith is put into their co-driver’s pace-notes.

  3. SO far Speed is not showing any listing for WRC this year. My fear is that they dropped it so they can show you more idiots playing poker, fake drag for slips shows, and school bus demolition derbies with monster trucks.
I have heard a rumer that there has still been no determination as to which network in Europe is going to cover WRC. This could be why Speed doesn’y have a listing for it. Here it is, Thursday before the rally and still no listing. They would normally show the rally Sunday night. UG I WANT MY WRC!

  4. dude….their not showing it in Speed channel anymore..I just heard it from my friend. They suck if their not airing it. >_

  5. I just sent feedback to speed tv through their website about their lack of WRC programming. I encourage you all to do the same. I’m desparate for my WRC! Looks like i’ll have to sign up for WRC+ coverage on wrc.com. suck.

  6. someone needs to help speedtv how stuped they are for dropping wrc coverage, what the hell is wrong with them. they need to call them selves nascar network cause thats all they focus on. they are all about business now, not about the viewers…….
