Opera has always been a good browser with excellent standards support — and now it’s free!
Opera has removed the banners, found within our browser, and the licensing fee. Opera's growth, due to tremendous worldwide customer support, has made today's milestone an achievable goal. […]
For a moment there, I was wondering how they’d make their money, but it looks like they have a Premium Support plan in place. All the same, I’m pretty stoked about this. And, if Firefox didn’t have so many scrumptious extensions, I’d consider trying Opera as my day-to-day browser.
Update 2005-09-23: According to Om Malik, it was Google that made Opera free, through a compensation deal. Well, yay Google :).
Yesh – but they don’t have a version for Palm. MAJOR SUXOR :(
I’m dying to find a good web browser for Palm. Opera is SO nice on the Zaurus – pages are readable and almost all pages work on it. I’d pay real $$$ for Opera for Palm.
Are you listening Opera? ;-)
Oh, but they do — Opera Mini for Treo (and it’s free too!). R0x0rs!
Ugh…I’ve never had to “register” for so many things before.
And WTF?!? The Java shit is free to Treo users but not Tungsten? Fuck that.
Opera can keep their fucking shit.
(Yes – I’m really aggrivated about this situation)
Perhaps I’m not seeing something, but Java for Palm seems free to me (including Tungsten C, Tungsten T3, Tungsten E, and Tungsten T5 ). :-/
Or do you mean Opera Mini for Tungstens — maybe that’s not free?
Well – the Websphere Java thingy, when you go to DL it, if you select Tungsten C it says “Were sorry – but this is only free to Treo users”.
So, I selected Treo and got it…but it just is aggrivating.
Sorry for the swear-intensive post. You can delete it if you want. :)
No worries — I’m sure it’s nothing HandCoding readers haven’t seen before.
I downloaded Opera for OSX back when they were running their “Birthday Party” free registration promo – I was impressed with the speed and reliability of the browser, but the interface is a little clunky for my tastes.
“…the interface is a little clunky for my tastes.”
Until you actually take the time to customize it to your tastes. ;) Opera can be whatever you want it to be. My UI layout:

Well, do tell, Superfluid — what settings did you use to get that layout?
