Red Dwarf on DVD, Finally

British sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf is finally available on DVD - Region 1 (DVDs can be artificially coded to only work in certain regions of the world, unless you have a gray-market region-free player). They’ve been available in the UK (Region 2) for some time now, but only recently have they been released for the US:

The Region 1 release is essentially the same as those in the UK and Australia. (check out the differences). Packed to the gills with 90 minutes of extra material, plus cast commentaries and collector’s booklets, they’ll be walking out of stores from February 25th. […]

Scifi.com also reviews the DVD release and gives it a “B”:

Red Dwarf is a long-time cult hit among SF fans, and it’s not hard to see why. The characters are engaging, and the interplay is frequently very funny. Much of the humor derives from the sheer cluelessness of the principals and the time-honored comedic tradition of rendering the dominant member of the team, in this case Rimmer, a bossy, self-absorbed twit who thinks he's a lot more impressive than he actually is. […]

If you’re looking to buy them online, DeepDiscountDVD has its usual low prices and offers the Seasons 1 & 2 Four-Disc Set for $52 (with free shipping). Or, either Season 1 or 2 alone for $26 each (also with free shipping).

TV Midseason Summary 2003

Zap2It, a tv & movie news site, features a preview of tv-midseason 2003. Of course, by now, it’s not so much a “preview”, and more of a “summary” ;). And by this point, I think some of the shows may have already been cancelled (I don’t recall if Veritas: The Quest is on anymore, for instance). Anyhow, some highlights:

What Not to Wear
Nominated by friends and/or family, a fashion victim is confronted for their clothing crimes. Under the guidance of two cruel-to-be-kind stylists, they are then sent out with $5,000 to put together an entirely new wardrobe. After buying new threads and undergoing a haircut and makeup revamp, each episode concludes with a dramatic reveal and follow-up footage to see if they reformed their ways or went right back to wearing stained sweats to the grocery store.
Premieres: Saturday, March 8 at 10 p.m. ET on TLC

Cartoon Network Bloopers
Even the animated world isn’t perfect. Find out what happened when Johnny Bravo flubs one of his lines or an anvil doesn't fall exactly the right way.
Airs: Saturday, June 7 on Cartoon Network

Traffic
Inspired by the Academy Award-winning film and using the same multi-tiered storytelling and innovative visual techniques, this limited series explores all aspects of the drug trade and stars Martin Donovan, Balthazar Getty, Mary McCormack and Elias Koteas.
Airs: Sundays from July 20 to Aug. 24 on USA

“Connie Chung Tonight” on The Zone, on Monday

I saw a teaser for Monday’s Connie Chung Tonight. Apparently as is vogue for slow newsrooms, they’ll be evaluating diets including The Zone (or, at least that’s my understanding from viewing the teaser without sound via the overhead tvs at the gym).

I know that some of my friends are looking to lose weight or get in better shape. The Zone isn’t difficult, and you won’t go hungry either (in fact, snacks between meals are required). I’ve been sticking with it since the summer, and it’s easy to stay with it.

Connie Chung Tonight airs weekdays on CNN at 8/7c and repeats that day’s episode at 10/9c.

Fox – The Pulse – on Zone/Atkins

I saw a teaser commercial for The Pulse which airs today (that is, Thursday) at 9/8c on Fox. I believe the headlining story is about Joe Millionaire (which is a fun show in its own right), but I’m not interested in the hype surrounding it.

However, The Pulse will also include a segment comparing various diets such as Atkins and The Zone. I’m interested to hear what they have to say, as I’m eating similarly to The Zone.

MTV Sells Out, Even More

Via ObscureStore, “new MTV policy means you'll see the same clips over and over”.

MTV plans to concentrate on a weekly list of 10 video clips, the so-called Big 10, each of which will be played more than 30 times a week — in some cases doubling the exposure that videos in heavy rotation had before. Other videos on the channel's playlist will get at least 10 plays, or “spins,” a week. […]

Not that MTV was exactly a purveyor of fine music before, but now they’re even closer to the sorry state that radio is in.
