I’ve recently discovered Monster Garage on the Discovery Channel, and it’s excellent. It’s similar in some ways to Junkyard Wars, but maybe even better (if that’s possible).
The premise is that a team is given a vehicle, $3,000 (for buying parts) and a challenge. For instance, in one show, they had to turn a Eddie Bauer edition Ford Explorer into a working garbage truck that had to be able to grab trash cans and empty them into truck. In another challenge, they had to turn a Lincoln Towncar limousine into a working fire truck.
But, the catch is that the vehicles have to appear stock from the outside (until the machine goes into action, of course). So, in the example of the of the fire-truck limousine, the team had to build a retractable nozzle that would come out of a panel in the roof of the limo.
And, the team members are incredibly smart people — world class gearheads, hot rodders, and mechanics. Their skills, from welding to hand-machining parts, were truly impressive.
Anyhow, Monster Garage airs Sundays at 4pm EST / 3pm CST on the Discovery Channel. Check it out.
You really think it might be better than Junk Yard Wars?
I saw my first episode of Monster Garage last night. They’re definitely better at building stuff that looks good than most of the people in JYW. But I think the way it was filmed was pretty goofy and the narrator was way annoying. (Of course this could have been just the one episode I saw.)
I also like that in JYW there’s a bit more of an element of luck because if you can’t find a part that works for your plan you have to come up with a new plan. With MG they just order the right part.
I sent in an idea for the show and they repliedwithin a week that it was going to be used! I was and still am a big fan!
I told them to change a ford windstar into a tank ad then take it to a military proving ground and make it go head to head with the t-34 on an obstacle course. That will be fun to see! Also the army has a lasr system that could be used to keep score. hat one will have to beprovided by the army though unles jessy can hook one up?
Yeah, the narrator has his rough spots. “A tisket, a tasket, put a hole in this gasket” comes to mind. But then that’s the cra–uh, I mean script that’s handed to him. It’s just that they wanted a grimy, gritty “man” show feel but they went succumbed to the Corny side of the Force.
I wonder what would have happened if Ice-T had been asked to host this instead of “Beyond Tough”? Does anyone think that would have been a decent setup?
Sorry, clarifying amendment to my last post: Ice-T to *host*, not to lead the build! That’s still Jesse James’ territory!
Monster Garage is way better than junkyard wars. they’re building stuff with a purpose. i can’t even watch a whole episode of junkyard wars. Besides Jesse James is the best.
Monster Garage is a great show & Jesse James is a self made success. He deserves the admiration of everyone who watches. A comment to Erica: If you think the filming & narration is goofy then maybe you should apply for the job if you’re qualified to make such a statement.
Hell yeah Jesse the best and know how to build somethin’ that work. He’s the best and he knows it!!!
I think you should make like a 1965-70 mustage in to a monster truck (car)that can go throw water…..i doubt it would work but i think it would be kool and i think you should add one more crew member but make it a kid. that would be the koolest thing in the world.
Apparently, there is an british version of Monster Garage. Anyone seen it, is it good?
